SALE OF PESACH HAMETS 2026

EVE OF PESACH 2026: Tuesday , March 31, 2026, the Eve of Pesach 2026. On this day, we must conduct the sale of chametz, search for chametz, observe the fast of the firstborn, and burn the chametz.

  • 1/ Sale of Chametz: The sale to a non-Jew must take place before the Arvit prayer and before the Bedikat Chametz.
  • 2/ Search for chametz: Starting at nightfall, we must perform the bedikat chametz—searching for the 10 pieces of bread while reciting the Kol Hamira prayer—before the onset of Shabbat.

TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 2026: IN PREPARATION FOR PESACH, WE MUST:

  • Burn the Hamet’s :(biur hametz with the Kol Hamira prayer) in the morning only, before 10:30 a.m.
  • We no longer eat chametz starting at 10:30 a.m.—that’s the time generally observed internationally.
  • Observing the Fast of the Firstborn: The Fast of the Firstborn on Passover is a minor fast observed by Jewish male firstborns, whether or not they are the firstborn son in the family. We observe this fast every year on the eve of Passover in commemoration of the divine protection that saved the Hebrew firstborns during the Plague of the Firstborn in Egypt. You may choose not to fast and instead attend a Shum (fasting service) for the Fast of the Firstborn at the synagogue with a minyan. You may also participate remotely; however, someone present at the Shum must bring you a portion of the Shum meal. Otherwise, you must fast until the start of the festival, that is, until the Kiddush of Passover 2026.

During Passover 2025, observant Jews recite the Book of Exodus and say blessings over foods arranged on a tray—the same foods the Israelites ate in the desert after escaping slavery under Pharaoh in Egypt. On the table are matzo, bitter herbs, a bone (symbolizing the sacrifice of the Passover lamb), a hard-boiled egg, celery, and haroset (a sweet mixture of fruit and nuts).

Passover is an inclusive holiday during which elders share this story with the younger generation, particularly the story of the Ten Plagues of Egypt—punishments sent by God to convince Pharaoh to free Moses’s people. Passover also marks the beginning of the annual agricultural cycle.
You can contact the Passover 2025 Hotline to learn more “about all the meanings and details of the Passover holiday” at +33 7 67 05 59 46. A rabbi specializing in Passover will answer your questions regarding what is prohibited and permitted, and, most importantly, provide information on the list from the rabbinical court that details all kosher products permitted for Passover, as well as household items.
